We are located in the so-called Tower of the Lawyers, in the building of the Old Court. The Tower, together with the Tower of the Praetorium or also known as the Pilate Tower, contained a large staircase that was used by the citizens of Tarraco to move around the various levels of the Provincial Forum.
This internal staircase of the Tower was the main access for pedestrians who wanted to circulate between the Circus and the Representation Square.
The building preserves a large part of the steps of the staircase made of Santa Tecla stone. These can be seen from where we are standing and from Carrer dels Ferrers.
Although they have not been preserved, we must imagine a Roman tower with a rectangular floor plan with other flights of stairs, a set of doors and a series of windows open to the various rooms that allowed light to enter the interior of the building.
Discover the polychrome replica of the statue of Augustus of Prima Porta, the original of which is in the Vatican Museums in Rome.
On the occasion of the thousandth anniversary of the death of the emperor Augustus in 2014, Tàrraco Viva commissioned two experts in restoration and ancient painting techniques to make a replica of this sculpture, to hypothetically restore it as it might have been in reality. The colour hypothesis shows us a completely different image to what is usual in ancient statues and, in some way, brings us closer to how it was seen two thousand years ago.
This statue is probably the most careful polychrome recreation of those that have been made so far from scientific and archaeological research.
Admire how the polychrome sculpture is dominated by bronzes and purple, a colour only assigned to the emperor´s figure.
