The Holy Burial Procession, the highlight of Easter Week in Tarragona
The Holy Burial Procession on Good Friday is the most eagerly awaited moment of Easter Week in Tarragona, in which more than 4,000 brotherhoods take part before the attentive gaze of visitors.
History is always present in Tarragona. And not only because of the city's great tourist attraction, the Roman archaeological legacy of Tarraco, but also because of its traditions. This is attested to by written documents, such as those that testify that as early as the Middle Ages, in the mid-16th century, Holy Week was celebrated thanks to the dedication of associations and brotherhoods. The first documented evidence of the celebration of the Holy Burial Procession through the streets of the Part Alta, the historic centre of Tarragona, dates from 1550.
The departure of the Procession of the Holy Burial is at 7.30 pm from the Natzaret Church and the route, amidst popular fervour, passes through the main streets and squares of the Part Alta to end at midnight in this same church, located in the Plaça del Rei.
The traditional Holy Burial Procession, declared a ‘Festive heritage element of national interest’ by the Generalitat de Catalunya (Catalan Government) in 2010, is attended by the armed members of La Sang and the thirteen Holy Week associations that accompany the respective floats (twenty in total).
