What is L'Embutada, Tarragona’s Young Wine Festival?

Tarragona has always been associated with wine, and the grape harvest has given rise to all kinds of festivities over the centuries. In the city, once the wine was fermented, the townsfolk flocked to the wineries to taste the young wine and raise a toast to life. Sitting on wooden benches, groups of friends, fishermen, castellers (human tower builders) and day labourers requested an embut (funnel), preferably full of wine. This funnel, unlike the ones we use today at home, had an angular shape. The funnel was passed from customer to customer, from friend to friend, while each person covered the bottom of the tube with a finger. The idea was not to be the last one to finish, because whoever ran out of wine had to pay for that round!

L'Embutada
Santa Teca is organising the seventh edition of the Embutada, Tarragona’s Young Wine Festival

The festival aims to uphold the memory and winemaking traditions of the funnel system, which was not only used in Tarragona and the towns of the county of Tarragonès, but also in such iconic winemaking regions as Priorat and Baix Penedès.

The epicentre of L’Embutada is Plaça del Rei in Tarragona, in the Part Alta (historic quarter), where fishermen and castellers used to celebrate the arrival of the grape harvest. Here you will find the tasting zone with the following establishments: El Cortijo, La Clotxa, El Cup Vell, Lola Bistro, Restaurant Cúmul and Forn Pastisseria Jordi Andreu, which will be offering a range of regional gourmet products, alongside the following wineries, which will be showcasing their first wines of the year and serving them directly from barrels, demijohns, or bottles:

Carlania, Oidà Celler, Celler 9+, Un sol cel, Celler Bàrbara Forés, Escabeces, Celler Comalats, Dasca Vives, Vidbertus, Vega Aixalà, Tanca els ulls, David Baixas, Tuets, Ficària vins, Celler Sanromà, Mas Sabatera, Enovitis, Succés Vinícola, Celler Josep Foraster, Constel·lats, Celler de l’Apotecari, Niu celler, Nini, Terra del Cister, Solà d’Ares, La Despeinada, Mas del Botó, Anna Serra, Camí de Sirga, Solà Classic, Mydolia
